Newport Gilded age
The first stop was Newport, RI. In the past several years, we have become fascinated with the Gilded Age in large part due to Gilded Age television series.
So we were very excited when we found the New England cruise was docking at Newport. We had to taxi from the ship to shore. Then a short walk to the bus meeting point.
The weather in Newport is usually mild, neither too hot nor too cold. The flow of air was perfect for summer homes in both the Northern and Southern states. A great escape from the diseases that plagued people at that time. The above picture is of Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, a Revolutionary War hero under the command of George Washington.
The tour continues with local history and the famous Astor list of 400 nobs (old money), omitting the swells (new money). Several comical anecdotes about those who didn't make the list.
Finally, we arrived at the Breakers mansion, built by Cornelius Vanderbilt.

Sail away Party
Everything went smoothly from leaving the hotel to boarding the Getaway. A few hundred questions were asked about 120 guys wearing a bear t-shirt. The ship's rules were different from those of other cruise lines. Eating together as a group is something Norwegians don't do, which can be inconvenient if you don't know anyone. Our tour group for Newport was with Bear Cruise, and they arranged a taxi to the port through the cruise line. Too late for the tour.

Last Day in New York
It's our last full day in New York. We went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They were having an exhibition called Superfine, Black male fashion throughout the history of the Unites states
What I remember the most is the view from the Top of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was hoping to view the skyline, and it did not disappoint.
In the evening, we returned to Deli across from the Holiday Inn, this time having strawberry NY cheesecake. Then we went to the Belasco Theater to see Maybe Happy Ending

New York, New York, What a hell of a town
On our first full day in New York, we decided to stay close to the hotel. My partner's thinking was that it was best to learn the layout of the neighborhood after going to Target for extra socks and breakfast at Appleby's.
We went to the Broadway Museum. There was a rich history of Broadway, but Disney, the revival of Broadway, and Times Square were hardly mentioned. Most of the memorabilia were from musicals of the past 30 years. Although the Wiz had a fair amount of stuff. Most of the travelers to Broadway are young and urban. The museum was loaded with young gay people working there. One in particular had a vast knowledge of Fanny Brice and Funny Girl. He provided details on how much of Funny Girl was true and how much was embellished; for instance, the famous pregnancy pillow scene actually happened, but only in the club Zeigfeld used to let performers test new material.
After our afternoon nap, we had supper at Junior Cheesecake on 45th Street.
I had pastrami on rye with Matzah ball soup. It was delicious, but I have better -think of Sharpio in Indy.
