The next port was Cologne. We took a walking city tour, which provided information about the start and history of the Cologne Carnival.
The city has monuments dedicated to the minority groups who were killed in WW2. The is the gay memorial, a pink triangle.
The Cologne mascots are Tunnes and Schal, two puppets with very different personalities. Tunnes is the lovable one who likes to drink, while Schal is a thin trickster, the forerunner of Laurel and Hardy. Their likeness can be found all over the city. Statues with their names are near a bar.
We watched the town prepare for Carnival. Tourists come from all over the world. Our tour guide told us about the legends of Cologne and the history of the city's rebuilding. Most of the stores were closed on Sunday except for those in museums.
The evening ended with drag performances from Europe, all Ru Paul contestants, including Envy Peru, winner of the Holland Ru Paul drag race.
